Calum Hamp to climb Kilimanjaro
Calum Hamp, 17, the eldest son of Jonathan Hamp, Genesys Account Manager for Africa, will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in May 2018 to raise money for an outstanding children’s charity, Childreach International.
Here’s an outline from Calum of what he will be up to:
“Along with about 40 of my school peers I will be attempting to ascend Mount Kilimanjaro, the world’s highest freestanding mountain at ~5,900 metres above sea level, in late summer of 2018. The climb is organised by a Childreach International, to raise funds for their work supporting and caring for children in a number of countries worldwide, including Nepal, Bangladesh, Brazil, Morocco and Tanzania.
“On arrival in Tanzania I will be spending my first two days visiting a school built and funded by Childreach International and will have the opportunity to meet and talk with some of the children the charity is helping.
“Day three, I will begin my ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro, for which I am already physically training. I am looking forward to seeing the terrain change from savannah to a cold rocky dessert.
“Day four we continue with our ascent and expect to climb above the cloud level. Here we will acclimatise for a further day before making an extremely early morning assault on the summit.
“On day six the climb to the summit is expected to take about seven hours, and will be done mostly in the dark. I hope to reach the summit in time to see the sun rise and enjoy the spectacular views before starting the descent. The descent to the base camp is expected to take a further two days.
“On return to the base camp I hope to be able to able to add my name to the record book of people who have successfully climbed Mount Kilimanjaro.
“We will then spend one last day in Tanzania before heading back home.”
